The Wolfman

In an industry overwrought with CG-driven movies, it’s nice to get back to basics. The Wolfman, a remake of the 1941 classic Universal horror film, does just that—and that’s why it makes our list. Rather than relying on VFX artists to create the cursed creature, director Joe Johnston turned to Academy Award winning makeup artist Rick Baker—who has brought everyone from Hellboy to that creepy kid from The Ring to life on screen—to create the Wolfman, played by Benicio Del Toro. “I sensed a negative reaction to the whole CG thing,” Johnston says. “I wanted the Wolfman to be based in reality. He’s restricted by the fact that he is a guy in a suit, basically, with great makeup on. [The movie is] an updating and retelling of the story, and a revisualization of the wolfman. And it’s really scary, too.” He had us at Rick Baker, who makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance as an unlucky gypsy in the film’s second spooky trailer (shown).
